Howbeit, the main culprit of cervical cancer is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which accounts for 90 – 95% of cervical cancer in women and is mostly transmitted via sexual intercourse. Persistent Infection with the human papillomavirus he advised was a basis of cervical cancer.

When petitioned on why Cervical Cancer was not an issue of concern in times past when people used to give birth to several children, he replied that cervical cancer was present during that era, however, there was not enough research and data to support the existence of the cancer. He pointed out that people may have died during those times of cervical cancer but it’s possible the cause of their death was assumed for something else.

He acknowledged that access to data and research now meant a true reflection and objective view of the burden of cervical cancer resulting in the robust fight against the cancer.

Dr.Effiong revealed some scary statistics stating that 2,700 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer. In comparison, 1,699 women died from cervical cancer each year and lastly less than 3% of women taking the pap test.

After all this, he emphasized that cervical cancer is entirely preventable and in cases where it was contracted it can be survived, hence the new tag “Survival Cancer” because it can be survived.
